apple: How to unlock a Mac device using Apple Watch – Gadgets Now
Apple added the ability to unlock the iPhone with an Apple Watch a while back. The feature made it easier for people to unlock their iPhones when wearing a mask. While the feature works flawlessly with the iPhone, many people don’t know that they can also unlock their Mac devices using the Apple Watch. In addition to that, the Apple Watch can also be used to approve app requests.
The Auto Unlock feature has been there on Apple Watch since before Apple introduced it for Apple iPhones. And, if you are wondering how the feature works, here’s our step-by-step guide for you.
- Compatible Apple devices — Apple Watch and MacBook running macOS Sierra or later.
- Enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both Apple Watch and MacBook
- Make sure to login into iCloud with the same Apple ID on both Watch and MacBook
- Make sure that the Apple Watch is running watchOS 7 or newer
Set up your MacBook
Click on the Apple icon at the top left corner and select About This Mac, here check where the Auto Unlock feature is supported or not. If it’s supported, enable Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on the device.
Do note that for the feature to work, you’ll need to enable both the connectivity options.
Set up your Apple Watch
Ensure the Apple Watch is linked to the same Apple account as the MacBook. Enable Two-factor authentication for the Apple ID. Once done, your Apple Watch is ready for the next step. Also, set up passcode for Apple Watch, if your watch is running watch OS 7 or later.
Open System Preferences on Mac and click on Security & Privacy
Navigate to General tab and select the option ‘Allow Apple Watch to unlock your Mac’
Once the entire setup process is complete, you can now simply wear your Apple Watch near the MacBook to wake it up. It won’t ask for the password.
As already mentioned, the Apple Watch can also be used to approve authentications. Once the Auto Unlock option is enabled, users can approve requests for app installation, viewing passwords, etc by simply double-clicking the side button.
